From the Desk of David W. Coleman Black America’s First Dad is Right Fifty years has passed since Brown vs.
The Board of Education and one would think black America would cherish
the opportunity to get a good education, yet high drop out rates, low
test scores and poor parental involvement suggest otherwise. The attack
on Bill Cosby by some in the black community is puzzling because he
was simply stating some hard to swallow facts which today’s so-called
black leaders are inept to address. Speaking at a Washington, D.C. Board of Education celebration, Cosby may see his invitations to speak at black liberal functions diminish. “These people are not parenting. They are buying $500 sneakers and won’t spend $200 on Hooked on Phonics,” he said. Unlike others who profit from black misery, Cosby has been a beacon of positivity from the time he became a public figure beginning with the television series I-SPY in the 1960’s. Who could forget the Bill Cosby Variety Show which aired in the early 70’s during a time when few blacks had positive roles. Most black baby boomers grew up on the values of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and Generation X witnessed first hand that blacks can be doctors and lawyers; grow up in a positive environment on the award winning Cosby Show of the 1980’s. Cosby went on to produce, A Different world, a show about black college life which launched the acting careers of Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison and many others. It was Cos who wanted to buy CBS in hopes of developing and airing more positive black programming. Moreover, Cosby and his wife Camille has spent millions of their own money to support traditional HBCU’s which many of those schools alumni turned their backs once they have graduated. It is easy to champion black America in words but there is no doubt that Cosby will be judged by his deeds. Instead of criticizing Cosby for using “these people,” how about analyzing his very valid points? Hiding behind the age-old mantras of racism, poverty, and mis-education is antiquated and suggests a helpless people. Black Americans posses more degrees than any other people in America and educating black children should be black America’s responsibility. Lifting blacks out of poverty would be easy if blacks would support one another’s businesses. Building black economic poor would literally make racism non-existent. Sure covert racism will always exists and it is a panacea to think otherwise but openly racist attitudes would tumble like dominoes against black economic power and prestige. History has shown the power of the almighty dollar during the Montgomery Bus Boycotts. If Cosby warrants criticism then what do other blacks millionaires deserve who have taken their millions through “black flight?” The MSRP for a PS2 or XBOX is $200. One game is approximately $50 dollars. Many black homes have these items of entertainment but will not purchase a computer to help close the digital divide between black and white family households. If black children are to be freed mentally
then their parents should be the liberators by demanding excellence.
Cosby only stated the obvious. It is easy to kill the messenger but
time has shown truth crushed to earth will always rise. Hasn’t the current
black leadership pointed its finger long enough? Cosby simply told them
to poop or get of the pot. The stench is from their own ineptitude.
