FSU’s Hypocrisy Overshadowed by NCAA’s Back Peddling

Sports fans are bewildered by the NCAA’s recent reversal of its controversial new policy banning offensive mascots for the Florida State Seminoles and seventeen other colleges and universities. What was viewed as a long over due stand against racism and bigotry by these colleges and universities has been cast asunder by the threat of litigation.

For years college and professional teams have used mascots to represent strength and courage. Many have found monikers that identify with their geographical locations which were not offensive to anyone. It seems only a few find it okay to continue to foster racist, stereotypical images as representations for what they consider pride.

This summer the NCAA decided enough is enough and sought to ban what they considered “hostile and abusive” Native American names and imagery. This new policy was met with stiff opposition accompanied with accusations of political correctness and litigation. According to the NCAA executive committee, they took nearly six years studying this new policy and had collected data from thousands who found the imagery portrayed by the Florida State University and others as offensive. Unfortunately, the NCAA wilted under the threat of litigation from FSU and others which further destroys its credibility. Those who support this bigotry are the same people who have never been enslaved, subjects of genocidal policies and have never been objects of discrimination. They argue the NCAA ignored Notre Dame and thus the new policy had no consistency. The NCAA countered that they received no complaints about the fighting Irish moniker and if they had there would be an investigation and if in fact there were those who found it offensive it too could possibly be banned. FSU states they have the right to use the image of Chief Osceola because they have the approval of the Seminole nation in the state of Florida. That approval comes with a price as FSU pays a hefty price to the Seminole nation of Florida. Hey FSU what about the Seminoles in other parts of the country?

Remember a few years ago when the University of Mississippi participated in the nationally televised Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee. The game was overshadowed by the waving of the Confederate Flag by thousands of university supporters. It was so offensive that Liberty Bowl and university officials received thousands of complaints from across the country and it led to the university instituting a policy that the offensive relic would no longer be tolerated at any university functions even though the symbol is part of the state flag. What if a group of African Americans in Mississippi would have condoned the imagery and the university offered them kickbacks to shut up? That still does not make it right and would that group represent the entire race of people? Therein lays the fallacy of FSU’s argument and any other university or professional team who purports racism and bigotry through its mascot. FSU’s policy states the Seminole tribe of Florida speaks for all Seminoles which really means to hell with everyone else because we are paying for it.

That is why the NCAA’s reversal is so appalling. In the words of general counsel member David Narcomey of the Oklahoma Seminole nation “I am deeply appalled, incredulously disappointed…I am nauseated that the NCAA is allowing this minstrel show to carry on this form of racism in the 21st century.”

America too should be nauseated that a university uses 30 pieces of silver to satiate a few only to offend so many others. FSU and the seventeen other colleges and universities should join the 21st century and stop supporting racist stereotypes.
