NFL Star’s Death no Less Horrific

As friends and family mourn the death of Sean Taylor, it is interesting to watch the speculation of those who are Taylor supporters and those who are not. It seems to me both groups are missing the stench of elephant dung piled up in the corner.
Wouldn’t it be grand if the national media paid as much attention to the daily carnage on our streets as it does to an NFL star that did not realize and understand his blessing? On any given day in Anytown USA, a young African America male is gunned down in majority of case by someone who looks like him. Life shortened by senseless violence over an insignificant issue whether it is drugs, money, women or self-hate. Just as a football coach dreads the midnight call from the local police department, parents wonder once their young boy leaves the safe confines of home will he return walking or in a body bag.

What is frustratingly perplexing is how certain self-appointed leaders continue to ignore the wanton disrespect for the black male life by black males. They attack any black who dares to think out side the box suggesting the continued self-hatred exhibited daily on our streets has to be addressed from within the black community if the epidemic is to be relieved. That succinctly means a re-examination to who we are individually, and collectively.

Where are they who would marshal minions to Jena, Louisiana or initiate protests against Imus? Why haven’t those self-appointed demagogues flooded the streets with followers demanding justice and peace on the streets within the black community? Our best and brightest are dying while black leaders play “Chase the racial epithet,” disserving the community by fanning nebulous race flames as opposed to standing, marching and protesting the vicious violence occurring in our schools and on our streets. Let a white man utter anything close to a slur and the black demagogues are on him like white on rice, demanding, marching and protesting. Imagine what would happen if the black community left their classes and jobs to protest each time another young black male is murdered.  Imagine a march led by the parents of each dead victim as the grand marshals. Imagine a march where the community weeps for its loss collectively and flags are flown at half staff due to another senseless death of a black child.

Taylor’s death is a tragedy but not unlike any other you black male cut down in the prime of his life. The parents of a child slain for hustling in the hood pain are no different from the parent of a superstar. The commonality is the dark skin, kinky hair, age and the senselessness of it all. No matter how dung is disguised one should never get accustomed to the stench. Its time for every one to sweep around their own front doors to rid our neighborhoods of this foul odor.
